Number Portability: Easily re-register your number with Leap for seamless business communications

If you have ever switched mobile service providers, then you have ported your number. This was not always easy to do because let’s face it, traditional telecommunications carriers didn’t want you to be able to switch carriers. They wanted to keep your business whether you wanted them or not!

FCC Defends Right to Convenient Local Number Portability (LNP)

However, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) dealt with this would-be monopoly in the 2000s through a series of portability mandates and extended Local Number Portability (LNP) to include service transfers to VoIP providers, like us, in 2007.

These laws established and defended your right to “…retain, at the same location, existing telecommunications numbers without impairment of quality, reliability, or convenience when switching from one telecommunications carrier to another.” (FCC 10-85).

What do these rules mean in practice? How easy is it to switch my number to VoIP?

FCC rules to define convenience:

Porting time period is limited to a maximum of 48 hours from the initial request

  • There is a possibility that if a port is deemed “complex,” the carrier can extend the time period to seven, or up to 20 business days at maximum.

The amount of information you can be legally required to provide is limited to just four items:

  • The 10-digit telephone number you want transferred
  • The registrant’s account number
  • 5-digit zip code
  • Passcode (if applicable)

These rules ensure that you can port your numbers to Leap easily, quickly, and conveniently, without causing any disruption in service. However, in certain cases, portability is made more difficult or impossible.

Some ports are complex; some are impossible… What you need to know

Here are a few factors that allow carriers to take more than 48 hours to port your number.

Maximum of 7 business days…

  • If you have multiple numbers, between 1-100 but one single Billing Telephone Number (BTN), one address, all registered with the same carrier and rate center
  • Toll-free ports (8xx)

Maximum of 20 business days…

  • Complex ports include multiple rate centers, BTNs, and addresses
  • Project ports with 100 or more telephone numbers are typically completed in less than 20 business days; however, these are typically handled manually and can, in extremely complex cases, take more time
